Precision positioning systems specialist Physik Instrumente (PI) recently introduced a new series of miniaturized, piezo-motor-driven linear positioners at the 2013 LASER World of PHOTONICS conference -- the world’s largest trade show for lasers and photonics related products.
PI’s new LPS-24 positioners are less than one inch wide and provide 15 mm travel range with closed-loop sensor resolution up to 2 nanometers. The small dimensions make these new positioners the ideal choice for high precision motion in confined spaces. A vacuum rated version is also available.

Reference-Class Linear Positioning Stages
These new reference class miniature positioners are equipped with a powerful piezo-walk motor providing thrust of 5 N (1 lb). Users have a choice of two linear encoders, depending on the precision requirements of the application.
Self-Locking Piezo Walk Linear Motor
The proprietary, high-resolution piezoelectric linear motor drive offers several operating modes: long distance, high-dynamics nanostepping (<1 nm resolution) and constant velocity mode. The self-clamping motor design provides long-term power-off position-hold capabilities without the need for a brake, another space and energy saving advantage of the LPS-24.
Closed-Loop, Interferometric Linear Encoder
With the patented PIone linear encoder, resolution of 2 nanometers is standard, and a 0.5 nanometer version is available on request. For lower precision requirements, a 150nm resolution sensor is offered.
Applications of the LPS Linear Positioner
Precision positioning and alignment of (fiber) optical or mechanical components in applications where space is at a premium. Examples are research and OEM instrumentation in fields such as precision-optics, life-sciences, medical design and bio/nano-technology.
Custom Designs
PI has a long history of working with instrumentation manufacturers and can easily modify existing designs or completely customize piezo devices to fit the exact requirements of the application. |
