Boeing Commercial Airplanes has a new contract to supply five 747-8 intercontinental jets to Air China, reportedly worth over $1.5 billion. Air China is the first Chinese carrier to order the passenger version of the new, fuel-efficient airliner, and plans to use the new jets to expand its international routes, but Boeing emphasized that the contract must be approved by Chinese government regulators.

The deliver schedule for the Air China jets has not been announced.

Separately, Boeing announced that International Lease Finance Corp. has finalized a $2.6-billion order for 33 Next-Generation 737-800 passenger jets.

"Air China has been operating 747s since the 1980s," stated Air China vice president He Li, vice president of Air China. "The new, high-capacity Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental will deliver exceptional economics and a great flying experience to our customers."

Boeing’s new 787 is powered by General Electric’s GEnx-2B engines, which it indicates operate more quietly and produce lower emissions with better fuel economy than any competing jetliner. It also has 26% more cargo volume than competing models.

The new 747-8 Intercontinental carries 467 passengers in a three-class configuration. It has a new wing design and modernized flight deck, redesigned interior cabin that gives passengers more room for carry-on luggage.

"The technologically advanced 747-8 Intercontinental will deliver improved operating economics, efficiency and environmental performance in support of Air China's continued growth," stated Boeing Commercial Airplane’ vice president for Sales & Marketing, Marlin Dailey. "Air China has become one of the fastest growing airlines in the world and today is one of the world's largest carriers. We're proud to be part of their success and look forward to continuing our long and enduring partnership."
